red roses, and Oh! all those other colors!

Roses are about the most popular flowers around. Red roses, yellow roses, white roses and pink roses are available from your online florist year round. If you are feeling creative, and you order online, say, a combination of long stemmed red roses, different shades of yellow roses, white roses or pink roses before noon, you will have them that afternoon, in most locations. Remember to ask for some foliage and other compatible flowers as well. Baby's breath is a wonderful standby, of course, and there is also Queen Anne's lace, love-in-a-mist, larkspurs, and snapdragons. For some trailing greenery, you could ask for variegated ivy, fragrant hanging jasmine, or the finer conifers in subtle shades of green. If you are able to go for a walk and find a piece of jazzy driftwood or twisted sticks, so much the better.

Roses last well, provided that they are first carefully conditioned. The minute they arrive, cut 1/4 inch off each stem with a sharp knife, preferably underwater. In order to insure maximum water uptake, some florists dip the roses in very hot water for a few second, to get any air bubbles out of the stems. Or you could just crush the lower half inch of each stem. Then let the long stemmed red roses, or your many shades of yellow roses, white roses and pink roses sit in warm water, which is as high as the base of the flowers, for a few hours. They should be in a cool place, out of direct sunlight.

Now comes the delightful job of creating your arrangement. Consider the size of your vase and where you will be placing the arrangement. You will first need to strip off any bacteria creating leaves that would sit underwater, along with the thorns. Next, arrange your base of greenery, considering the overall shape you want to create. Then outline your overall shape with generous displays of complementary flowers, such as carnations, snapdragons or larkspurs. Finally, place your long stemmed red roses, or your glorious shades of yellow roses, white roses and pink roses, making an exquisite design all your own.
